What Makes Ibiza Unique
Red Soil – Fertile Ground

If you drive around the countryside, you will notice the red soil, which is especially visible in summer when the fields are harvested. This is due to the iron content of the soil. In summer, it looks dry and shriveled. However, because of the clay, the soil can retain its moisture below the surface and is known to be quite fertile.
On Ibiza, you won’t find large-scale farms. Even by European standards, fields and plantations are divided into small plots. When mechanization arrived in agriculture, farmers’ houses were already spread across the countryside, so there was no opportunity to create large fields.
Colorful – Lizards

The most notable animal you will encounter on the island is the lizard. They love to hang out on sunny rocks or walls. They can be found in the countryside, by the coast, or in urban areas. Once approached, they vanish quickly.
They have become a symbol and are displayed on many souvenirs. There are many subspecies of lizards—no one has ever counted them all. Even on some very small rocks in the sea near Ibiza, there are variants that can only be found there. Lizards are protected, and even relocating a lizard to another place can harm the ecological balance.
The abundance of lizards is closely related to the absence of snakes. Ibiza was a snake-free island until recently. Snakes were presumably imported in olive tree planters from the mainland. Now, snakes are threatening the ecosystem.
Salt – The White Gold of the Island
Salt production has a very long tradition on Ibiza, dating back to the 8th century BC. It has been a major source of the island’s wealth and was once called the “white gold.” In earlier times, salt was important for preserving food. On Ibiza, there is an area with an optimal topography for salt production, which is already visible when approaching the island by air.
Salt production is still ongoing today. Most of the salt is shipped to northern Europe. If you want to buy a smaller amount as a souvenir, look for the brand "Sal de Ibiza."

Hierbas Ibicencas – The Power of Herbs
Hierbas Ibicencas is a liqueur based on anise. It is traditionally served as a digestif in restaurants. It contains the flavors of herbs typical to the island, such as thyme, rosemary, and fennel. In earlier days, each household had its own variation of the recipe; today, there are four manufacturers producing it.
Bullit de Peix – From Simple Fishermen’s Food to Delicacy
In earlier days, this stew—containing different types of fish and served with potatoes or rice—was a basic fishermen’s meal. They used the fish they couldn’t sell at the market. Today, it is a delicacy that you can enjoy in select restaurants on the island.
Sofrit Pagès – A Special Meal from the Countryside
Sofrit Pagès has been a special meal for Ibizan families during holidays or other celebrations. It contains everything the land has to offer: chicken, lamb, and special sobrassada and botifarró sausages. The ingredients are braised and served with vegetables and potatoes.
Ad-Lib Fashion – Dress as You Want, but in Style

Ad-Lib is a fashion style. Typical features include long, white dresses with artful embroidery. It was created on Ibiza as a blend of traditional clothing and hippie culture. Today, it is still very fashionable, and on the island, there are several designers who continue to develop the style. The fashion can be purchased in different qualities and at various price points, for example, in small shops in Ibiza Town as well as in specialized boutiques.
